A Veteran’s Vision: Vinnie Moore’s ‘Aerial Visions’ (KICP 1740)

Today’s entry spotlights the eighth solo studio album from the American guitar virtuoso Vinnie Moore. We are looking at the 2015 Japanese pressing of “Aerial Visions,” released on the Nexus label (King Records) with the catalog number KICP 1740. This copy comes complete with its original obi strip.

Released to coincide with the 30th anniversary of his professional debut, this album finds Moore exploring a mature, earthy sound. While less focused on the relentless neo-classical shred of his early “Mind’s Eye” era, “Aerial Visions” leans heavily into blues-based hard rock textures and “withered” tones. However, Moore’s signature emotive playing, characterized by precise bending and expressive vibrato, remains at the forefront, particularly on the ballad-style tracks.

The album features a solid rhythm section including drummer Richie Monica and a rotating cast of bassists such as Dave LaRue, Dorian Heartsong, Rob DeLuca, and Elliott Rubinson. The tracklist features ten instrumentals that range from original compositions to a spirited cover of ZZ Top’s classic “La Grange.”

As is tradition with King Records releases, this Japanese edition offers a unique treat for collectors. It includes an exclusive bonus track titled “Let’s Jam (Vinnie At 15 Years Old).” As the title suggests, this is a rare archival recording capturing the teenage Moore’s blossoming talent, featuring impressive trills and phrasing that foreshadowed his future success.

KICP 1740 is a celebratory release, packaged with a visual discography in the booklet honoring his career. It stands as a high-quality document of a guitar hero continuing to evolve his craft with taste and soul.
