Defending the Heavy Metal Crown: Edguy’s ‘Space Police’ Deluxe Edition (MICP-90075)

Today’s entry takes us to the playful yet powerful world of German heavy metal with Edguy’s tenth studio album, “Space Police – Defenders Of The Crown.” We are looking at the 2014 Japanese limited edition, released on the Avalon label (Marquee Inc.) with the catalog number MICP-90075. This deluxe package comes complete with its original obi strip.

Released on April 23, 2014, this album found the band, led by the charismatic Tobias Sammet, continuing to evolve their sound. While rooted in their classic power metal origins, “Space Police” embraces a more diverse, hard rock, and sometimes glam-infused style, filled with humor and adventurous songwriting.

The album features a mix of heavy hitters and catchy anthems. The opening track “Sabre & Torch” delivers a metallic punch, while “Love Tyger” showcases their fun, glam rock side. The title tracks, “Space Police” and “Defenders Of The Crown,” offer a blend of progressive elements and classic metal choruses. Perhaps the most surprising inclusion is a cover of Falco’s “Rock Me Amadeus,” featuring German rapping, which perfectly illustrates the band’s willingness to experiment. The epic closer “The Eternal Wayfarer” provides a grand finale to the main album.

This Japanese limited edition is a treasure trove for collectors, featuring a second bonus disc. Disc 2 includes exclusive tracks like the humorous piano ballad “England” (a tribute to Steve Harris and the UK) and “Aychim In Hysteria,” alongside instrumental and progressive versions of album tracks. MICP-90075 is a comprehensive package that captures Edguy at their most confident and entertaining, blending serious musicianship with an infectious sense of fun.
