Igniting the Solo Career: Gus G.‘s ’I Am The Fire’ (KICP 1683)

Today’s entry spotlights the debut solo album from Greek guitar hero Gus G., widely known as the leader of Firewind and the former guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne. We are looking at the 2014 Japanese pressing of “I Am The Fire,” released on the Metal Frontier label (King Records) with the catalog number KICP 1683. This particular copy includes the original obi strip.

Released on March 26, 2014, “I Am The Fire” marked a significant step for Gus G., showcasing his versatility beyond the power metal confines of his main band. Rather than a purely instrumental shred fest, this album is a collection of well-crafted hard rock and heavy metal songs featuring an impressive roster of guest vocalists and musicians.

The album features diverse vocal talents such as Mats Levén (Yngwie Malmsteen, Candlemass), Jeff Scott Soto (Journey, Yngwie Malmsteen), Michael Starr (Steel Panther), and Tom S. Englund (Evergrey). Instrumental guests include legendary bassists Billy Sheehan and David Ellefson. The tracks range from driving modern metal like the title track (featuring Devour The Day) to melodic hard rock like “Summer Days” and instrumental showcases like “Vengeance.”

As is customary with King Records releases, this Japanese edition offers exclusive value to collectors. It includes a bonus thirteenth track, “Without You,” further expanding the album’s melodic range. KICP 1683 captures a modern guitar hero stepping into the spotlight with a collaborative, song-oriented debut that pays homage to 80s and 90s hard rock while maintaining a modern edge.
