A Spirited Mission of Rock: Michael Schenker’s ‘Spirit On A Mission’ (KICP 1721)
Today’s entry spotlights the second album from Michael Schenker’s Temple Of Rock. We are looking at the 2015 Japanese pressing of “Spirit On A Mission,” released on the Nexus label (King Records) with the catalog number KICP 1721. This particular copy comes complete with its original obi strip.
Released on March 4, 2015, this album showcases a band firing on all cylinders. Following the success of their debut, Schenker solidified the lineup with former Scorpions rhythm section Herman Rarebell (drums) and Francis Buchholz (bass), alongside vocalist Doogie White (Rainbow, Yngwie Malmsteen) and keyboardist/guitarist Wayne Findlay.
This stability resulted in a tighter, more cohesive hard rock album. Fans praised the album for its variety, balancing fast-paced, driving rockers like the opener “Live And Let Live” and “Vigilante Man” with heavier, mid-tempo tracks that utilize Findlay’s 7-string guitar for a modern edge. Schenker’s guitar work is, as always, the star, delivering his signature melodic solos and riffs with renewed vigor. Doogie White’s vocals also received acclaim for fitting perfectly with Schenker’s compositions.
For collectors, this Japanese SHM-CD edition is the definitive version. It includes the exclusive bonus track “Ying And Yang,” a poignant, acoustic-driven song featuring Michael Schenker himself on lead vocals, adding a personal and emotional touch to the album’s conclusion. KICP 1721 is a high-quality document of a guitar legend leading a powerful band on a successful musical mission.
