A Summit of Guitar Gods: Michael Schenker’s ‘Temple Of Rock’ (KICP-1584)

Today’s entry shines a light on a star-studded solo effort from the German guitar god, Michael Schenker. We are looking at the 2011 Japanese pressing of “Temple Of Rock,” released on the Nexus label (King Records) with the catalog number KICP-1584. This particular copy comes complete with its original obi strip.

Released on September 7, 2011, this album was a significant event in the hard rock world. It served as a massive reunion and celebration, bringing together Schenker’s former bandmates and legendary peers. The core collaboration is with vocalist Michael Voss, whose melodic hard rock sensibilities color much of the album. However, the guest list is staggering, featuring Scorpions alumni (Rudolf Schenker, Herman Rarebell), UFO bandmates (Pete Way, Paul Raymond), and icons like Simon Phillips, Carmine Appice, Don Airey, and even William Shatner providing a spoken word intro.

The album features moments that recall Schenker’s classic era, such as the driving “The End Of An Era” (featuring dazzling keyboard work from Don Airey) and the heavy “Speed.” A standout moment for guitar enthusiasts is track 14, “How Long (3 Generations Guitar Battle Version).” This track features a unique trade-off between Schenker, mountain rock legend Leslie West, and modern melodic death metal hero Michael Amott, bridging three distinct eras of rock guitar. Vocalist Doogie White also delivers a strong performance on “Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead.”

As is tradition with King Records releases, this Japanese edition offers exclusive value to collectors. It includes the bonus track “Remember” as the 15th song. KICP-1584 is a high-quality package that captures a guitar legend surrounded by his friends and heroes, delivering a celebration of rock history.
