Momentum of a Master: Joe Satriani’s ‘Unstoppable Momentum’ (EICP 1579)
Today’s entry spotlights the fourteenth studio album from the legendary guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani. We are looking at the 2013 Japanese pressing of “Unstoppable Momentum,” released on the Epic label via Sony Music Japan International with the catalog number EICP 1579. This particular copy comes complete with its original obi strip.
Released in 2013, this album finds Satriani maintaining his incredible consistency as both a technical wizard and a melodic songwriter. A major highlight of this recording is the “super session” backing band he assembled. The rhythm section features the legendary drummer Vinnie Colaiuta (known for work with Frank Zappa, Jeff Beck, and Sting) and bassist Chris Chaney (Jane’s Addiction), alongside keyboardist Mike Keneally.
The chemistry between Colaiuta’s dynamic, heavy drumming and Satriani’s guitar work is a focal point, pushing the music into more emotional and groovy territory. The album offers a rich variety of sounds, ranging from the driving energy of the title track and “Lies And Truths” to the emotional melodies of “Can’t Go Back” and the breezy, open atmosphere of “A Door Into Summer.” Some tracks even hint at the hard rock vibe of his band Chickenfoot.
EICP 1579 is a high-quality presentation of modern instrumental rock, capturing a guitar master supported by a world-class rhythm section.
