A Modern Revelation of Classic Metal: Astral Doors’ ‘New Revelation’ (KICP 1269)

Today’s entry spotlights the fourth studio album from the Swedish heavy metal torchbearers, Astral Doors. We are looking at the 2007 Japanese pressing of “New Revelation,” released on the Metal Frontier label (King Records) with the catalog number KICP 1269. This particular copy includes the original obi strip.

Released on October 24, 2007, this album found the band continuing their mission to keep the spirit of classic 80s hard rock and metal alive. Astral Doors are frequently compared to giants like Rainbow, Deep Purple, and Black Sabbath, largely due to the commanding vocal presence of Nils Patrik Johansson, whose gritty, powerful delivery draws immediate and favorable comparisons to the late Ronnie James Dio and David Coverdale.

“New Revelation” is an interesting entry in their discography. While firmly rooted in traditional metal, the production (mixed at Peter Tägtgren’s Abyss Studio) leans towards a heavier, more modern power metal sound compared to their earlier, more 70s-influenced work. This shift sparked some debate among purist fans at the time, but the album delivers undeniable power with tracks like the driving title song, “Freedom War,” and “Bastard Son.” The “Dio-esque” vocals remain the highlight, soaring over heavy riffs and dramatic arrangements.

As is tradition with King Records releases, this Japanese edition offers significant exclusive content. It includes two bonus tracks found at the end of the disc: “Lament Of The East” and “21st Century Medieval,” bringing the total tracklist to 13 songs. KICP 1269 is a high-energy release for fans of traditional heavy metal, capturing a band bridging the gap between classic influences and modern power.
