A Experimental Turn: TNT’s ‘Transistor’ (VICP-60789)
Today’s entry highlights a fascinating and often debated album in the discography of Norwegian hard rock legends TNT. We are looking at their 1999 studio album, “Transistor,” released in Japan on the Victor label with the catalog number VICP-60789. This particular copy includes the original obi strip.
Released on August 4, 1999, “Transistor” marked a significant stylistic departure for the band. Moving away from the classic 80s heavy metal sound of “Intuition” or “Tell No Tales,” guitarist Ronni Le Tekrø and vocalist Tony Harnell embraced a more modern, alternative, and pop-rock direction for this record. The result is a collection of catchy, radio-friendly songs that, while different from their roots, showcase their undeniable songwriting craft and Harnell’s superb vocal abilities.
The album features tracks like “No Such Thing,” “Wide Awake,” and “Fantasia Española.” While it may have surprised die-hard metal fans at the time, it has since garnered appreciation for its melodic strength and experimentation.
As is tradition with Japanese releases, VICP-60789 offers exclusive value to collectors. It includes the Japan-only bonus track “Free Again,” bringing the total track count to eleven. This pressing stands as an interesting document of a band willing to take risks and evolve their sound as they entered a new millennium.
