A fascinating early 7-inch single from the band Lazy is the focus for this entry. We are looking at their 1977 release, “Camouflage,” issued on the RCA label with the catalog number RVS-1097.
This single represents a significant strategic move by the band’s label. Following their unsuccessful debut single (“Hey! I Love You!”), the label brought in a team of superstar hitmakers to secure a hit. This 45 RPM vinyl features two tracks written by this powerhouse duo: lyrics were penned by the legendary Yumi Matsutoya (Yuming), with music and arrangement by the prolific hitmaker Shunichi Tokura.
The single features:
A: Camouflage
B: Queen ni Fusawashii (Befitting a Queen)
Both tracks showcase a polished pop style, distinct from the hard rock the band’s members famously craved, and feature a notable call-and-response vocal arrangement.
Despite the superstar songwriting talent, “Camouflage” was not the massive hit the label had hoped for. While it sold decently in Tokyo, it famously failed to crack the national Oricon Top 100 chart. RVS-1097 remains an essential document of Lazy’s pop-idol era and the industry’s attempts to shape their sound, released just before the members would eventually forge their own heavy metal destiny.
