A significant stylistic detour in the career of Japanese hard rock pioneers Bow Wow is the focus for this entry. We are looking at their 1978 7-inch single, “Sabishii Yuugi” (Lonely Game), released on the Invitation label (Victor) with the catalog number VIH-1033.
Issued in November 1978, this 45 RPM vinyl served as a lead-in single for their fourth album, “Guarantee.” This period marked a distinct shift for the band, moving away from their early hard rock roots towards a sound often described as “rock-taste Kayōkyoku” (Japanese pop).
This shift is underscored by the high-profile collaborators involved. Both tracks feature lyrics penned by the legendary Aku Yu, one of Japan’s most famous and prolific lyricists known for his work with pop idols. The A-side, “Sabishii Yuugi,” features music by Mikio Sato with arrangements by guitarist Kyoji Yamamoto and Koji Ryuzaki. The B-side, “Harry & Karen,” features music composed by the renowned rock singer Masahiro Kuwana.
VIH-1033 serves as a fascinating document of Bow Wow’s experimental pop phase, capturing a moment where hard rock musicians collaborated with the giants of the Japanese pop industry to create a unique hybrid sound.
