A rare gem from the early days of the Japanese girls’ metal scene is the focus for this entry. We are looking at the debut 7-inch single by Flying Vision, titled “Dreamy Night,” released on the legendary Danger Crue label with the catalog number HMS-001.
Issued on September 10, 1985, this 45 RPM vinyl holds significant historical weight. It was the very first release ever issued by Danger Crue Records, the independent label that would go on to house major acts like Reaction and D’erlanger. Reportedly limited to just 1,500 copies, this single is an extremely rare find today.
Flying Vision was an all-female heavy metal band active in the early Tokyo scene. The lineup featured Shimako “Shima” Tanaka on vocals, Junko “Junko” Okamura on guitar, Chikako “Chika” Tokuda on bass, and Michi “Michi” Iida on drums.
The single features two tracks, both composed by guitarist Okamura with lyrics by vocalist Tanaka:
A: Dreamy Night
B: Danci’n
The sound is described as a charming blend of “Pop & Heavy,” combining beautiful, flowing melodies with a solid hard rock rhythm. The B-side, “Danci’n,” is a re-recorded studio version of a song that had previously appeared on the live compilation “All Night Metal Party,” making this single a high-quality presentation of their best material.
While the band released demo tapes and appeared on video compilations, most of their material remains very difficult to find. HMS-001 stands as the most accessible, yet still highly collectible, document of Flying Vision’s catchy and heavy sound, marking the beginning of the Danger Crue legacy. The lyrics were printed inside the folded sleeve.
