A Debut from the Extasy Family: Ladies Room’s ‘Swapping Party’ (EXE-001)
Let’s dive into the roots of the Visual Kei movement with the debut EP from the glam metal band Ladies Room. This is “Swapping Party,” released in May 1988 on the legendary independent label Extasy Records with the catalog number EXE-001.
Formed in 1987 around vocalist Hyakutaro and bassist Sex George, Ladies Room became a core part of the “Extasy family.” This release came to fruition largely because George famously worked as a roadie for X (later X Japan), leading X’s leader Yoshiki to release this EP on his label.
This 7-inch, 33 ⅓ RPM vinyl captures the band’s raw, sleazy, and high-energy blend of hard rock, glam, and heavy metal. Recorded at Studio Penta in Yokohama, the EP features three tracks:
A1: Glamour Girl
B1: Juice
B2: Swapping Party
The lineup for this recording included Hyakutaro (Vocals), Fucker “A”-chan (Guitar), Sex George (Bass), and Wild Sixx “9” (Drums).
EXE-001 is a significant artifact for collectors of Japanese rock history. It documents the early days of Ladies Room before their major success and serves as a testament to the close-knit community surrounding Extasy Records that would go on to define a generation of Japanese music.
