Let’s focus on the second and final studio album from the powerful hard rock band 5X, fronted by the legendary Carmen Maki. This is their self-titled 1983 release, “Carmen Maki’s 5X,” issued on the Eastworld label (Toshiba EMI) with the catalog number WTP-90213. This particular copy includes the original obi strip.
Following their “Human Target” debut and “Live-X” album, this release is often seen as the band’s most polished and “major” sounding work. Produced by guitarist George Azuma, “Carmen Maki’s 5X” aimed for a broad appeal, blending their British and American hard rock influences.
This album is legendary for its high-profile guest appearances. It features superstar guitarist Akira Takasaki of Loudness and renowned keyboardist Mickey Yoshino of Godiego, adding significant musical firepower and industry buzz.
Fans often regard this release as a masterpiece that perfectly condenses the band’s charm. It features a diverse range of tracks, from the Judas Priest-esque riffing of “Fever” to the band’s celebrated cover of the Bobby Hebb classic “Sunny.” Another track, “Higher And Stronger,” was uniquely recorded live in the studio with fans to capture an authentic, energetic feel.
“Carmen Maki’s 5X” (WTP-90213) stands as the impressive final statement from this iconic collaboration, showcasing a high-quality, polished sound enriched by all-star guests.
