A Landmark Debut: X’s ‘Vanishing Vision’ (EXL-001)
This is a truly legendary piece of Japanese rock history: the debut album “Vanishing Vision” by the band X (later known as X Japan), bearing the catalog number EXL-001 with obi.
This 12-inch vinyl LP holds immense significance as it was released in April 1988 independently on Extasy Records – the label founded by the band’s own leader, Yoshiki. Being the inaugural release on the label (EXL-001), it represented a bold statement from a band determined to forge their own path.
“Vanishing Vision” was a groundbreaking album for its time. It unleashed X’s signature, revolutionary sound: a ferocious and dramatic blend of speed metal, power metal, intricate symphonic arrangements (often driven by Yoshiki’s piano and drumming), and surprisingly poignant, emotional ballads. Toshi’s soaring, unique vocals and the blistering twin-guitar attack (featuring hide and Pata on this recording) became instantly recognizable hallmarks. Tracks like “Kurenai” (in its earlier English version here) and “Vanishing Love” showcased their dynamic range and songwriting prowess.
Despite being an independent release, “Vanishing Vision” achieved unprecedented success, breaking records on the indie charts and quickly establishing X as a major force. It laid the groundwork for their explosive major label debut and is considered a foundational album for the entire Visual Kei movement, influencing countless bands that followed.
EXL-001 is more than just a record; it’s a historical artifact capturing the raw energy and ambition of a band that would change Japanese music forever. It remains an essential item for fans and collectors, representing the explosive genesis of X Japan.
