A Rare Slice of Lynott: Thin Lizzy’s ‘The Best Of’ Japanese Promo (SNP-89)

Today’s entry features a highly collectible item for the serious Thin Lizzy fan. We are examining the 1979 Japanese Promotional Only compilation LP titled The Best Of Thin Lizzy, released by Vertigo with the catalog number SNP-89.

“Not For Sale” Rarity

Unlike standard greatest hits albums found in record stores, this release is a special promotional item produced exclusively for the Japanese music industry. The “SNP” catalog series by Vertigo/Phonogram Japan was typically reserved for “Special Not For Sale” compilations distributed to radio stations and DJs to promote an artist’s upcoming tour or latest album.

The Black Rose Era

Released in 1979, this compilation coincides with the Black Rose: A Rock Legend era. This is evident from the inclusion of tracks like “Waiting For An Alibi” (the album opener) and “Do Anything You Want To.”

The tracklist serves as a flawless primer on the band’s twin-guitar harmony sound and Phil Lynott’s poetic storytelling. It includes the obligatory anthem “The Boys Are Back In Town,” the live favorite “Cowboy Song,” the romantic “Still In Love With You,” and the driving energy of “Sha-La-La.”

Collector’s Value

Because these records were never sold to the general public, they are significantly rarer than standard commercial issues. They often feature unique track sequences tailored specifically for the Japanese market’s taste at the time.

It is an elusive artifact from the peak of the band’s popularity in Japan.
