Rock ‘n’ Roll Energy: Kodomo Band’s Debut ‘Hungry Boy’ (28SW-1001)
This is the debut album from the energetic Japanese rock ‘n’ roll outfit, Kodomo Band. We are looking at their 1980 release, “We Love Kodomo Band” often referred to simply by its lead track “Hungry Boy,” with the catalog number 28SW-1001.
Released on Canyon Records’ See・Saw label, this 12-inch LP captured the raw, high-octane energy that Kodomo Band became famous for. Although a studio album, it was recorded with the specific intention of capturing their live performance feel, resulting in a sound bursting with intensity and spontaneity.
Led by the distinctive vocals and guitar work of Jikuya “Jiku” Ujirou, Kodomo Band played a relentless style of rock ‘n’ roll, heavily influenced by punk energy, boogie, and classic rock. “Hungry Boy” (the album) is a perfect snapshot of this early sound. Tracks like the titular “Hungry Boy,” “Rock & Roll Singer,” and “Oira Chotto” showcase their speed, catchy hooks, and Jiku’s unique vocal delivery.
28SW-1001 is more than just a debut; it’s a foundational album in the Japanese rock scene. Kodomo Band’s straightforward, no-frills rock ‘n’ roll was influential, and this record perfectly documents the explosive start to their long and storied career. It remains a favorite for fans of high-energy Japanese rock.
