The Funky Side of Deep Purple: Glenn Hughes’ ‘Play Me Out’ (MWX 4028)

Today’s entry explores the soulful solo debut of the man known as “The Voice of Rock.” We are examining the 1980 Japanese Reissue of Play Me Out by Glenn Hughes, released on Safari Records (manufactured by Polydor K.K.) with the catalog number MWX 4028.

A Soulful Departure

Originally released in 1977, shortly after the dissolution of Deep Purple Mk IV, this album reveals Hughes’ true musical passion: funk, soul, and R&B. A far cry from the heavy metal of his previous band, Play Me Out allows Hughes to stretch his vocal range and bass chops in a style reminiscent of Stevie Wonder and Earth, Wind & Fire.

The album features a stellar lineup of friends and collaborators, including his former Trapeze bandmates Mel Galley (guitar) and Dave Holland (drums, later of Judas Priest), as well as guitar wizard Pat Travers. Highlights include the groovy opener “I Got It Covered,” the atmospheric “Space High,” and the heartfelt ballad “Destiny.”

“Immortal Hard Rock” Series

This 1980 pressing is particularly interesting for collectors because it was released as part of the “Immortal Hard Rock Original Masterpieces 15 Selection” series. The inclusion of this smooth, funk-oriented album in a “Hard Rock” series is a curious bit of marketing history that highlights how closely Hughes was tied to the genre in the public eye, regardless of the music’s actual style.

Inclusions

This high-quality Japanese pressing comes complete with the original lyric insert, providing a perfect analog experience of this underrated gem.
