Hipgnosis in the USA: Wishbone Ash’s ‘New England’ (SD 18200)
Today’s entry focuses on a specific US variation of a twin-guitar classic. We are examining the US pressing of New England by Wishbone Ash, released with the catalog number SD 18200.
The Albert Brothers Production
Produced by Howard Albert and Ron Albert, this album features the band’s definitive “Mk II” lineup: Martin Turner on bass and lead vocals, Steve Upton on drums, and the legendary dual guitar attack of Andy Powell and Laurie Wisefield. The record showcases their signature blend of melodic hard rock and folk influences, incorporating electric, acoustic, and slide guitars, as well as mandolin textures.
Unique US Artwork Variations
The cover art was designed by the legendary design group Hipgnosis, with inside photography by Storm Thorgerson. However, this specific US Version is distinct from the UK and European releases in three key ways, making it a point of interest for cover art collectors:
- Green Lettering: The title “New England” is printed in green wording on the front cover.
- Illustration Detail: The front cover illustration features an “extra figure” that does not appear on other pressings.
- Rear Tracklist: Unlike some international versions, this edition includes a track list printed on the rear cover.
