The Ultimate Shock Rock Package: W.A.S.P.‘s ’The Last Command’ Deluxe Promo (S33-1001)
Today’s entry highlights one of the most impressively packaged vinyl releases of the 1980s metal boom. We are examining the 1985 Japanese Promo Sample pressing of The Last Command by W.A.S.P., released on Capitol Records as part of the “Hard Attack ’85” series with the catalog number S33-1001.
Anthems of the Wild Child
Released on November 21, 1985, The Last Command saw Blackie Lawless and company refining the raw edge of their debut into a more focused, anthem-heavy sound. Produced by Spencer Proffer (best known for Quiet Riot’s Metal Health), the album retains the band’s aggressive energy while delivering polished heavy metal classics. It features the band’s signature hit “Wild Child,” the raucous party anthem “Blind In Texas,” and the dark, driving “Widowmaker.” This album also marked the debut of drummer Steve Riley, solidifying the classic lineup alongside Chris Holmes and Randy Piper.
The Legendary ¥3,300 Deluxe Set
What makes this specific Japanese pressing (S33-1001) a “Holy Grail” for collectors is its incredible array of bonus contents. Priced at a premium ¥3,300 upon release, it was marketed as a complete fan experience. A fully complete copy is notoriously difficult to find because it originally included so many loose items:
- W.A.S.P. Logo Necklace: A die-cast metal necklace that was often lost or worn by the original owner.
- Visual Extras: A large fold-out poster and a logo sticker.
- Documentation: A deluxe 16-page booklet, a color cardboard inner sleeve, and a black-and-white insert with Japanese lyrics and liner notes by Masa Itoh.
Exclusive Promo Specifications
This specific copy is a Promo Sample, elevating its rarity even further. The vinyl disc labels feature specific promotional markings distinguishing them from the commercial release. Additionally, a numbered “Sample” sticker is affixed to the rear sleeve. Manufactured by Toshiba EMI, the audio quality is top-tier, but it is the sheer volume of “swag” included in this package that makes it a centerpiece for any heavy metal collection.
