Canadian Melodic Gold: Brighton Rock’s ‘Young, Wild And Free’ (P-13442)
Today’s entry features a hidden gem of the 80s melodic rock scene. We are examining the 1986 Japanese Promo Sample pressing of Young, Wild And Free by Brighton Rock, released on the WEA label with the catalog number P-13442.
A Melodic Hard Rock Masterpiece
Released in 1986, this album is widely considered a masterpiece of the genre, delivering bright, catchy anthems one after another. Hailing from Canada, this five-piece band (featuring keyboards) crafted a sound defined by Gerald McGhee’s distinctive raspy, husky vocals and infectious, pop-infused chorus work. Produced by the legendary Michael Wagener (famous for his work with Dokken, Skid Row, and Accept), the production is polished and powerful. The album features 10 tracks, including the standout single “We Came To Rock,” which enjoyed heavy rotation on MTV at the time, as well as the high-energy title track. It is a quintessential example of 80s hard rock that perfectly balances grit with melody.
Japanese Promo Edition
This specific copy is a Promo Sample manufactured by Warner-Pioneer Corporation. It is distinguished by a numbered “Sample” sticker affixed to the back cover, verifying its status as a copy originally distributed to the media and industry insiders. The release comes with a lyric insert that includes liner notes by Masa Itoh, providing a complete snapshot of this Canadian band’s debut impact in Japan.
