Live Metal History: Iron Maiden’s ‘Running Free’ 12-inch (S14-120)

Today’s entry features a powerful slab of vinyl from the peak of the World Slavery Tour. We are examining the 1985 Japanese White Label Promo pressing of the Running Free 12-inch EP by Iron Maiden, released on the EMI label with the catalog number S14-120.

The World Slavery Tour Chronicles

Released on November 30, 1985, this EP served as the lead single for the legendary live album Live After Death. Produced by the band’s long-time collaborator Martin Birch, the A-side features a raucous version of “Running Free” recorded at the Long Beach Arena in California in March 1985. It captures the massive audience participation and Bruce Dickinson’s commanding stage presence that defined the tour. The B-side offers two more essential live cuts: “Sanctuary,” also recorded at Long Beach, and a blistering rendition of “Murders In The Rue Morgue,” recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon in London in October 1984. These tracks showcase the band at their absolute performative zenith.

Exclusive White Label Promo

This specific copy is a highly desirable Promo Sample. Unlike the standard commercial releases which typically feature the custom “Eddie” picture labels or standard EMI branding, this disc bears the stark, text-only White Labels. These labels signify that this was a promotional copy distributed to radio stations and industry insiders ahead of the general release. Such copies are prized by collectors for their rarity and the clean aesthetic of the white label against the black vinyl. A numbered “Sample” sticker is also affixed to the rear cover to verify its status.

Audiophile 45 RPM Quality

Manufactured by Toshiba EMI, this release is pressed at 45 RPM, ensuring maximum audio fidelity and volume—perfect for the dynamic range of a live heavy metal recording. The package is complete with the original Obi strip (listing the ¥1,400 price) and a one-sided black and white insert containing lyrics and information on the band’s Japanese discography. It is a pristine artifact from the golden age of Iron Maiden.
