The Wilson Sisters’ Historic Debut: Heart’s ‘Dreamboat Annie’ (ECS-70191)
Today’s entry highlights the album that introduced the world to the powerhouse vocal and guitar duo of Ann and Nancy Wilson. We are examining the 1986 Japanese Promo Sample reissue of Dreamboat Annie by Heart, released on the EMI label with the catalog number ECS-70191. While the album was originally released in 1976, this specific high-quality reissue was pressed a decade later, likely to coincide with the band’s massive commercial resurgence in the mid-80s.
Folk and Rock Fusion
Recorded at Can-Base Studios in Vancouver, Canada, and produced by Mike Flicker, Dreamboat Annie is a masterclass in blending delicate acoustic textures with hard rock muscle. The album features iconic tracks that remain staples of classic rock radio to this day. “Magic Man” showcases the band’s groove with Ray Ayotte’s congas and Howard Leese’s synthesizer work, while “Crazy On You” features Nancy Wilson’s legendary acoustic guitar introduction before exploding into a rock anthem. The title track appears in three different variations throughout the record, weaving a conceptual thread through a setlist that ranges from the aggressive “White Lightning & Wine” to the oceanic atmosphere of “Soul Of The Sea.”
Rare White Label Promo
This specific copy is a highly collectible Promo Sample of the 1986 reissue. Unlike the standard commercial releases which would feature the standard retail labels, this disc bears the clean, text-only White Labels that were exclusively distributed to radio stations and industry critics. Furthermore, the back cover is affixed with a “Sample” sticker, verifying its status as a non-retail promotional copy.
Japanese Reissue Packaging
Manufactured by Toshiba EMI Ltd, this pressing offers the exceptional audio quality that Japanese vinyl is famous for. The package is complete and collector-grade, featuring the original Obi strip and a lyric insert. The insert includes Japanese liner notes written by Hisayuki Azuma, providing context for the band’s career up to that point. It is a pristine way to own one of the most important debut albums of the 1970s.
