Eccentric Prog-Metal Brilliance: Jason Bieler’s ‘Postcards From The Asylum’ (BVBR002)

Today’s entry dives into the wonderfully weird and melodic world of Jason Bieler (formerly of Saigon Kick). We are looking at the 2023 double vinyl release of Postcards From The Asylum by Jason Bieler And The Baron Von Bielski Orchestra, released on his own label, Baron Von Bielski Records, with the catalog number BVBR002.

A Genre-Bending Journey

Released on July 28, 2023, this album continues Bieler’s streak of defying easy categorization. Blending heavy riffs with Beatles-esque harmonies and progressive structures, the music is as ambitious as it is catchy. Tracks like “Heathens,” “Numb,” and “Flying Monkeys” showcase a sophisticated mix of hard rock and pop sensibilities. The project features an impressive roster of top-tier talent, including guitarist Andee Blacksugar (KMFDM), drummer Edu Cominato, bassist Todd “Dammit” Kerns (Slash, The Age of Electric), and keyboardist Ryo Okumoto (Spock’s Beard).

Humor in the Fine Print

A highlight for collectors is the packaging and liner notes, which reflect Bieler’s signature wit. While the musicianship is serious, the credits are populated with fictional characters and humorous roles. Alongside the actual musicians, you will find credits for “The Nightfish Smugglers” (backing vocals), “Wormbsy Troutlick” (brass), and fashion consultation provided by “3 Guys Named Jim.” Even the A&R team is listed as “Dwindling Supply” and “Earless Cluesearcher.”

Format and Manufacturing

This release is presented as a 2-LP set, allowing the 15-track album to span four sides for optimal audio fidelity. The album was mastered for vinyl by Scott Craggs. The runout matrices feature the initials “KP,” indicating the lacquer cut was performed by a dedicated cutting engineer. The records were manufactured in Canada.
