Chaotic Brilliance: Megadeth’s ‘So Far, So Good… So What!’ (C1-48148)
Today’s entry looks at a pivotal and often underrated chapter in the Megadeth saga. We are examining the 1988 US pressing of So Far, So Good… So What!, released on Capitol Records with the catalog number C1-48148.
A Turbulent Transition
Released in January 1988, this album documents a chaotic period for the band. Following the departure of Gar Samuelson and Chris Poland, frontman Dave Mustaine recruited drummer Chuck Behler and guitarist Jeff Young to fill the ranks. The result is a darker, grittier, and perhaps more punk-infused record than its predecessor, Peace Sells…. The album opens with the instrumental assault “Into The Lungs Of Hell” and features the emotionally charged “In My Darkest Hour,” written by Mustaine upon hearing of Cliff Burton’s death. It also includes a high-speed cover of the Sex Pistols’ “Anarchy In The U.K.,” which features original Pistols guitarist Steve Jones on guest guitar.
Production and Sound
The production history is legendary for its turbulence, initially produced by Paul Lani before being remixed by Michael Wagener to achieve the final product. The result is a reverb-heavy, cavernous sound that captures the raw aggression of the era. The album was mastered by Stephen Marcussen at Precision Lacquer.
Pressing Details
This specific copy is a 1988 US pressing on Capitol Records. A key identifier for collectors is on the center labels: this version does not feature the Combat Records logo to the left of the spindle hole, a variation often found on other pressings.
