German Metal Royalty: Velvet Viper’s ‘Nothing Compares To Metal’ (MASLP1335)
Today’s entry focuses on the 2023 release from a true legend of the German heavy metal scene. We are examining the vinyl edition of Nothing Compares To Metal by Velvet Viper, released on Massacre Records with the catalog number MASLP1335.
The Return of Jutta Weinhold
Velvet Viper is the brainchild of the iconic female vocalist Jutta Weinhold, originally formed in 1990 following her departure from the cult band Zed Yago. After releasing two albums in the early 90s and a long hiatus, the band reformed in 2017 and has been consistently active since. Released in 2023, Nothing Compares To Metal is the band’s 8th full-length album, arriving roughly two years after their previous effort, Cosmic Healer.
Dramatic Power Metal
Musically, the album stays true to the “Dramatic Metal” sound inherited from the Zed Yago era—characterized by simple, driving power metal rhythms, heavy guitar riffs, and Weinhold’s commanding, theatrical vocals. However, this release distinguishes itself with a focus on epic storytelling. The majority of the tracks clock in between 5 and 7 minutes, allowing for expansive arrangements that are subtly enhanced by the use of synthesizers to create a grandiose atmosphere. Highlights include the title track “Nothing Compares To Metal,” the mythological “Urd Wardande Skula,” and the sweeping “Sorcerer’s Apprentice.”
German Vinyl Import
Released on the German label Massacre Records, this 12-inch vinyl edition captures the band’s modern production with the punch and warmth of the analog format. It stands as a testament to Weinhold’s enduring power and the timeless appeal of traditional Teutonic heavy metal.
