Sci-Fi Thrash Revival: Voivod’s ‘Target Earth’ (SRE645LP)
Today’s entry features a modern classic from the Canadian legends of progressive sci-fi metal. We are looking at the 2023 limited edition reissue of Target Earth by Voivod, released on Svart Records with the catalog number SRE645LP.
A Return to Form
Originally released in 2013, Target Earth marked a pivotal moment in the band’s history. It was the first album to feature guitarist Daniel “Chewy” Mongrain, who stepped in to honor the legacy of the late Denis “Piggy” D’Amour. The album is widely celebrated as a return to the band’s signature “tech-thrash” sound, blending the dissonance of their early work with the progressive structures of their mid-period. Tracks like “Kluskap O’Kom” and “Mechanical Mind” showcase the band’s unique ability to weave complex rhythms with catchy, alien melodies.
Format and Limitation
This release is a treat for vinyl collectors, presented as a double LP set to ensure optimal audio quality. This specific pressing is on classic Black Vinyl and is strictly limited to just 300 copies worldwide.
Packaging
The album features the distinctive artwork of drummer Michel “Away” Langevin, whose graphic style is inseparable from the band’s identity. The release comes with a hype sticker on the outer plastic cover, confirming the limited nature of this reissue.
