Dokken’s Magnum Opus: ‘Back for the Attack’ (960735-1)
Today’s entry examines the commercial and artistic peak of one of the 80s’ most volatile yet successful partnerships. We are looking at the 1987 vinyl release of Back for the Attack by Dokken, released on Elektra Records with the catalog number 960735-1.
The Peak of LA Metal
Released in November 1987, this album represents the band’s fourth studio effort and their most successful release, reaching #13 on the US Billboard charts. It stands as the final full-length album recorded by the classic lineup of Don Dokken, George Lynch, Jeff Pilson, and Mick Brown before their acrimonious split. Produced by Neil Kernon, the sound shifted away from the polished radio sheen of Under Lock and Key toward a heavier, grittier direction that allowed George Lynch’s guitar work to dominate the mix.
The Music
Clocking in at over 60 minutes, this is a dense and dramatic collection of songs. The album is famous for its aggressive opening track, Kiss Of Death, and the chart-topping single Burning Like A Flame. However, the record is defined by two specific tracks: the movie theme Dream Warriors (from A Nightmare on Elm Street 3) and the legendary instrumental Mr. Scary. The latter serves as the ultimate showcase for George Lynch, filled with technical ferocity that solidified his status as a guitar hero. The album balances this heaviness with Don Dokken’s signature melodic vocals, proving there were no “filler” tracks on this 13-song giant.
Production:
The album credits read like a Who’s Who of the industry. It was mixed by the powerhouse team of Steve Thompson and Michael Barbiero (known for their work with Guns N’ Roses and Tesla) and mastered by the legendary Bob Ludwig at Masterdisk, ensuring that the vinyl pressing retains a massive, punchy low end despite the long running time.
Format:
This is the standard LP release, housing over an hour of music on a single disc, a common practice before the CD fully took over the market.
