Multi-Platinum Debut: Skid Row’s Self-Titled Classic (781936-1)

Today’s entry focuses on one of the most explosive debut albums in heavy metal history. We are looking at the 1989 US pressing of Skid Row by Skid Row, released on Atlantic Records with the catalog number 781936-1.

The Last Great Band of the 80s

Released in January 1989, just as the glam metal wave was cresting, this album introduced a tougher, grittier sound to the mainstream. Fronted by the charismatic Sebastian Bach and driven by the songwriting duo of Rachel Bolan and Dave “The Snake” Sabo, the band bridged the gap between Mötley Crüe’s excess and Guns N’ Roses’ street attitude. Produced by the legendary Michael Wagener, the album sold millions of copies worldwide and remains a genre staple.

The Music

The album is packed with radio hits that defined the era. It opens with the heavy groove of Big Guns and includes the gritty Piece Of Me. However, it was the power ballad 18 And Life and the rebellious anthem Youth Gone Wild that turned the band into superstars. The album closes with the massive hit I Remember You and the aggressive Midnight / Tornado.

Collector’s Details

This entry represents the original US vinyl pressing, which is becoming increasingly sought after as clean copies from 1989 get harder to find.

Format:
This is a standard single LP. As a release from the tail end of the vinyl era, original pressings are prized for their analog warmth compared to the mass-produced CDs of the time.

Mastering:
Original US copies were typically mastered at Sterling Sound by Ted Jensen. Many of these pressings utilized DMM (Direct Metal Mastering) technology, resulting in a very punchy, bright, and loud sound profile that suits the aggressive production perfectly.
