The Blueprint of Heavy Metal: Judas Priest’s ‘Stained Class’ (S CBS 82430)
Today’s entry focuses on a pivotal moment in the history of heavy metal. We are examining a UK reissue of Stained Class by Judas Priest, released on the CBS label with the catalog number S CBS 82430.
The Darker Side of Priest
Originally released in 1978, Stained Class is widely regarded by critics and fans as the album where Judas Priest truly defined their sound. Moving away from the progressive and blues-rock influences of their earlier work, the band adopted a sleeker, faster, and darker approach. It was the only studio album to feature drummer Les Binks, whose technical proficiency—particularly his double-bass drumming—helped invent the template for speed metal.
The Music
The album opens with Exciter, a track often cited as one of the very first speed metal songs, driven by Binks’ relentless rhythm and Rob Halford’s piercing screams. The Spooky Tooth cover Better By You, Better Than Me is catchy yet ominous, while the title track Stained Class displays the band’s intricate riffing. The album’s centerpiece is undoubtedly Beyond The Realms Of Death, a progressive ballad that remains one of the band’s most emotional and powerful compositions, featuring legendary solos from both Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing.
Collector’s Details
This specific copy is a UK reissue, likely from the late 1970s or early 1980s, presented on the famous CBS Sunburst labels.
Label:
The record features the gradient orange-to-yellow Sunburst label design. A distinguishing feature of this variation is that the Label Code (LC) is positioned on the left side of the label.
Mastering:
Audiophiles should note the runout grooves, which contain a hand-etched Lyre symbol (often associated with Utopia Studios). This indicates that the lacquer was cut at Utopia, a studio known for producing excellent sounding records during this era.
Packaging:
The sleeve was printed by Shorewood Packaging Co. Ltd., a standard for high-quality UK covers of the time. Unlike the first pressings, this reissue comes with a plain white inner sleeve rather than a printed one.
