NWOBHM Archaeology: Tokyo Blade’s ‘Genghis Khan Killers’ (HRR 165)
Today’s entry digs deep into the roots of one of the premier New Wave of British Heavy Metal acts. We are looking at the 2011 double vinyl compilation Genghis Khan Killers by Tokyo Blade, released on High Roller Records with the catalog number HRR 165.
The Pre-History of a Legend
Before they adopted the name Tokyo Blade and released their classic self-titled debut, the band operated under different monikers. This comprehensive compilation collects the surviving recordings from those formative years. LP 1 features the rare demo tapes from 1980 when the band was known as Killer. The set continues with the extensive 1982 demos and studio sessions recorded when the band had evolved into Genghis Khan.
The Music
This release offers a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of the band’s sound. It features the classic lineup including guitarist Andy Boulton and vocalist Alan Marsh. Listeners can hear the raw, unpolished energy of tracks that would later be refined for Tokyo Blade’s official releases. The set includes the material from the Double Dealin EP, such as If Heaven Is Hell and Highway Passion. The audio was lovingly remastered by Patrick W. Engel, ensuring these rough gems sound as powerful as possible.
Collector’s Details
High Roller Records presented this archival release with their usual attention to detail.
Format:
This is a Double LP set housed in a gatefold sleeve, necessary to accommodate the extensive tracklist of over 20 songs.

Extras:
To provide context for these historical recordings, the release includes a four-page insert featuring liner notes and rare photos from the band’s early days.
