The Sabbath Dio Years Revived: Heaven & Hell’s ‘Radio City Music Hall Live 2007’ (SPV 98101)

Today’s entry documents a historic night in heavy metal history, capturing the triumphant reunion of the version of Black Sabbath fronted by Ronnie James Dio. We are looking at the 2008 double vinyl release of Radio City Music Hall Live 2007 by Heaven & Hell, released on the German label Steamhammer with the catalog number SPV 98101 2LP.

A Historic Reunion

Released in 2008, this album features the legendary lineup of Ronnie James Dio (vocals), Tony Iommi (guitar), Geezer Butler (bass), and Vinny Appice (drums). Operating under the name Heaven & Hell to differentiate themselves from the Ozzy Osbourne-led version of Black Sabbath, the band embarked on a tour to support the release of their compilation, The Dio Years. This recording captures their performance at the prestigious Radio City Music Hall in New York City on March 30, 2007, showcasing a band that sounded just as powerful and heavy as they did in the early 1980s.

Setlist of Classics

The setlist is a dream for fans of the Dio era, drawing exclusively from the albums Heaven and Hell (1980), Mob Rules (1981), and Dehumanizer (1992). The album opens with the ominous drone of E5150 before launching into The Mob Rules. The performance includes doom-laden epics like Children Of The Sea, The Sign Of The Southern Cross, and the rarely played Computer God. The night concludes with an extended version of the anthem Heaven And Hell and the high-speed closer Neon Knights.

Collector’s Details

Steamhammer produced this release with the quality expected of a major live album.

Format:
The album is presented as a Double LP set housed in a gatefold sleeve. The artwork features the distinct gothic imagery associated with the band’s revival.

Sound:
Recorded by the Record Plant Mobile Studio and mixed by Wyn Davis, the audio quality is superb, capturing the massive crunch of Iommi’s guitar and the soaring clarity of Dio’s voice.

Pressing:
This is the German pressing, manufactured and distributed by SPV GmbH. It is a crucial document for collectors, as it serves as one of the final major live recordings released during Ronnie James Dio’s lifetime before his passing in 2010.
