The Homeric Metal Odyssey: Manowar’s ‘The Triumph Of Steel’ (BOBV272LP)

Today’s entry examines a massive deluxe reissue of Manowar’s most ambitious studio album. We are looking at the 2011 Back On Black reissue of The Triumph Of Steel, pressed on Red Vinyl with the catalog number BOBV272LP.

A New Era of Virtuosity
Originally released in 1992, The Triumph Of Steel marked a pivotal moment for the band. It was the first album to feature the new lineup with guitarist David Shankle and drummer Kenny Earl “Rhino”, both of whom brought an incredible level of technical speed and precision to the Manowar sound.

The album is famous (or infamous) for its opening track: “Achilles, Agony And Ecstasy In Eight Parts.” This 28-minute heavy metal retelling of The Iliad is so massive that on this double LP edition, it spans the entirety of Side A and Side B. It remains the longest song in Manowar’s history, showcasing intricate solos, drum solos, and theatrical narration.

The Hits
Once the epic concludes, the second LP (Sides C and D) delivers the punchy, anthem-heavy metal fans crave. It features “Metal Warriors” (an ode to true metalheads), the blistering “Ride The Dragon,” and concludes with one of the band’s most beautiful ballads, “Master Of The Wind.”

Collector’s Details
Back On Black, a UK label specializing in high-quality heavy metal reissues, gave this album a premium presentation in 2011:

Colored Vinyl: This specific edition is pressed on Red Vinyl, perfectly matching the bloody aesthetic of Ken Kelly’s cover art. Audiophile Quality: The records are pressed on 180-gram heavyweight vinyl for superior stability and sound. Packaging: Housed in a sturdy gatefold sleeve that features the lyrics, allowing listeners to follow along with the complex narrative of the Achilles suite. Rarity: This red vinyl pressing was a limited edition of just 1000 copies.

This release is the ideal way to experience the sheer scale of Manowar’s 90s output, combining high-fidelity sound with a stunning visual presentation.
