The Norse Saga: Manowar’s ‘Gods Of War’ (MCA 01203-1)
Today’s entry looks at the tenth studio album by the Kings of Metal, a massive conceptual undertaking focused on Norse mythology. We are examining the 2007 vinyl edition of Gods Of War by Manowar, released on the band’s own Magic Circle Music label with distribution by SPV, bearing the catalog numbers MCA 01203-1 and SPV 2LP 85601.
A Symphonic Concept Album
Released in 2007, Gods Of War marked a significant stylistic shift for the band. While still heavy, the album is deeply symphonic and theatrical, intended as a tribute to Odin, the King of Gods. It features extensive use of keyboards, choirs, and orchestral arrangements, alongside spoken-word narration that tells the story of the Norse pantheon.
Key Tracks
While the album is heavy on interludes, it delivers crushing metal tracks like the galloping “Sleipnir” (about Odin’s eight-legged horse) and the majestic “King Of Kings.” However, the biggest draw for many fans is found on Side E: the bonus track “Die For Metal.” This mid-tempo stomper became an instant classic and a permanent fixture in their live set, celebrating the dedication of their fanbase.
Collector’s Details
Format: It is a triple-vinyl set (specifically two full LPs and one single-sided LP), meaning there are 5 sides of music. The set is housed in a high-quality gatefold sleeve. The Uncensored Artwork: A key detail for collectors is the cover art by Ken Kelly. This specific pressing features the original uncensored artwork, depicting the naked women at the feet of the warrior. Some versions (particularly CDs and digital releases in certain regions) censored this imagery, making this vinyl edition the “pure” vision of the band. Production: The album credits proudly state “All songs recorded and produced in Hell,” maintaining the band’s over-the-top image, though the actual technical credits reveal it was mixed at the high-end Galaxy Studios in Belgium. This vinyl release is a massive package designed for the true collector:
