The Crown Jewel of Epic Metal: Manilla Road’s ‘Crystal Logic’ (HRR 193)
Today’s entry opens the tome on one of the most revered cult bands in heavy metal history. We are looking at the 2012 reissue of Crystal Logic by the American legends Manilla Road, released by the German audiophile label High Roller Records with the catalog number HRR 193.
Originally released in 1983, Crystal Logic is widely considered the magnum opus of the Wichita, Kansas trio. It marks the point where the late Mark “The Shark” Shelton (guitar/vocals), Scott Park (bass), and Rick Fisher (drums) fully transitioned from their earlier space-rock influences into the sound they termed “Epic Metal.” The production is raw and dry, but the songwriting is mythical.
The album is anchored by the track Necropolis, an absolute anthem of the underground metal scene with its infectious chorus and driving rhythm. Other highlights include the galloping Flaming Metal System (which originally appeared on a Shrapnel Records compilation), the doom-laden The Veils Of Negative Existence, and the complex, sprawling closer Dreams Of Eschaton. Shelton’s nasal, distinct vocals and unique guitar tone give the album an atmosphere unlike anything else from the era.
For collectors, HRR 193 is a stunning tribute to this classic. This specific entry is the 2nd edition pressing on Crystal Clear vinyl, a fitting choice given the album’s title. This variant was limited to just 250 copies. The packaging is luxurious, featuring a heavy 425gsm cardboard gatefold sleeve that restores the original artwork to its full glory, along with a poster. High Roller Records is known for their attention to detail, and this release ensures that the “Crystal Logic” shines brighter than ever.
