A Seminal NWOBHM Classic: Holocaust’s ‘The Nightcomers’ (PSP LP 1)

Today’s entry takes us to Edinburgh, Scotland, for one of the defining albums of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM). We are looking at the 1981 UK pressing of **Holocaust**’s debut studio album, *The Nightcomers, released on the *Phoenix Record And Filmworks** label with the catalog number PSP LP 1.

A Heavy Metal Anthem
Released in April 1981, this album is a cornerstone of the raw, gritty side of the NWOBHM movement. Holocaust delivered a sound that was heavier and rougher than many of their contemporaries, driven by the crunchy guitar work of John Mortimer and Ed Dudley and the distinctive vocals of Gary Lettice.

The album is most famous for containing the track “Heavy Metal Mania,” an absolute anthem of the genre that was notably covered by German power metal legends Gamma Ray. Other standout tracks include the driving opener “Smokin’ Valves” and the powerful “Death Or Glory.” While Metallica famously covered Holocaust’s “The Small Hours” (from a different release), the influence of The Nightcomers on the thrash metal genre is undeniable.

Collector’s Note
This specific entry highlights a variation with Yellow Labels, which differs from other pressings that may have different label designs or colors.

PSP LP 1 is an essential artifact for any serious metal collector. It captures the unpolished, working-class energy of Scottish heavy metal at the dawn of the 80s, delivering riffs that have stood the test of time.
