A Modern Classic of High-Energy Rock: High Spirits’ ‘Another Night’ (HRR 191)
Today’s entry spotlights a landmark release in the modern traditional heavy metal scene. We are looking at the 2011 debut full-length album Another Night by High Spirits, released in Germany on the High Roller Records label with the catalog number HRR 191.
High Spirits is the brainchild of the prolific Chicago-based musician Chris Black (also known for his work with Dawnbringer, Pharaoh, and Superchrist). On this recording, Black demonstrates his immense talent by handling the songwriting, production, and performance duties entirely on his own, crafting a singular and cohesive musical vision.
Musically, Another Night is a celebration of high-energy rock. It masterfully blends the twin-guitar harmonies and galloping rhythms of New Wave of British Heavy Metal legends like Iron Maiden and Tygers of Pan Tang with the catchy, radio-friendly hooks of 70s and 80s arena rock bands like Thin Lizzy and Foreigner. The result is an irresistibly catchy, upbeat, and melodic album.
The tracklist is packed with instant anthems. The opening track, Another Night In The City, sets a perfect tone with its driving rhythm and memorable chorus. Other standouts include the fast-paced Full Power, the darker mood of Demons At The Door, and the emotional resonance of Nights In Black.
HRR 191 is a high-quality German pressing from High Roller Records, a label synonymous with quality traditional metal vinyl. This album is widely regarded as a modern classic, helping to define the New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal (NWOTHM) sound for a new generation.
