Unearthing Belgian Steel: Thorax’s ‘Test Of Time’ Compilation (HRR 034)
Today’s entry shines a light on a deep cut from the European underground. We are looking at the 2008 compilation album Test Of Time by the Belgian heavy metal band Thorax. Released by the respected reissue labels High Roller Records and Metaleros, this double LP carries the catalog numbers HRR 034 and MET 004.
This release serves as a comprehensive archival collection, rescuing the band’s recorded history from cassette obscurity. It compiles material from three distinct demo tapes, allowing listeners to trace the band’s evolution through the golden age of heavy metal.
The tracklist is chronologically arranged across the four sides. Sides A and B feature the band’s 1986 self-titled demo, characterized by the inclusion of keyboards. Side C covers the 1987 demo Crusaders Of Steel, while Side D features tracks from their 1990 demo Borderline. The music is classic, traditional heavy metal, driven by the dual guitar attack of Chris Verstappen and Rudi Schrijvers and the vocals of Marcel Sprangers. Tracks like Metal / Powerraid and Crusaders Of Steel exemplify their underground spirit.
HRR 034 is a premium package designed for serious collectors of obscure 80s metal. It was released as a limited edition of just 500 copies, housed in a gatefold cover, and includes a 4-page insert. This compilation stands as the definitive document of Thorax’s contribution to the Belgian metal scene.
