Basque Heavy Metal Pioneers: Su Ta Gar’s ‘Jaiotze Basatia’ (IZ 349-D)
Today’s entry explores a groundbreaking release from the history of European heavy metal, specifically from the Basque Country. We are looking at the 1991 debut album Jaiotze Basatia by Su Ta Gar, released in Spain on the Zarata Diskak label with the catalog number IZ 349-D.
Su Ta Gar is a legendary name in the scene, celebrated for being one of the very first heavy metal bands to sing entirely in Euskara (the Basque language). This album, whose title translates to “Wild Birth,” captures the band at their inception, delivering a sound that is raw, fast, and politically charged.
Musically, the album sits at the intersection of classic heavy metal and speed metal. It features the dual guitar attack of Aitor Gorosabel and Xabier Bastida, backed by the rhythm section of Asier Osoro and Borxa Arrillaga. The energy is relentless, often compared to early Judas Priest or Iron Maiden but with a distinct regional identity.
The tracklist contains songs that became absolute anthems for the Basque metal community. The most famous of these is the closing track, Jo Ta Ke (meaning “without stopping” or “hit and hit”), which remains the band’s signature song to this day. Other standouts like Mari and the title track showcase their melodic yet aggressive style.
IZ 349-D is a significant cultural and musical artifact. This original vinyl pressing, which came with a lyric insert, is a highly collectible item documenting the birth of Euskadi heavy metal.
