Forging Metal in Nagoya: Tilt’s ‘Stick Into Yours’ Mini-Album (ELL-021)
Let’s dive into the mid-80s Japanese underground metal scene, focusing on the influential Nagoya band Tilt and their mini-album, “Stick Into Yours.” Released in 1986 on the Electric Lady Land Records (ELL Record) label, this 12-inch, 45 RPM vinyl carries the catalog number ELL-021.
Tilt emerged from the vibrant Nagoya scene in 1983, quickly establishing themselves alongside bands like Sniper and Crowley as a powerful force in the region. Based out of the renowned live house E.L.L. (Electric Lady Land), which also served as their record label, Tilt honed a potent heavy metal and hard rock sound.
Following an initial EP, “Stick Into Yours” served as their more substantial debut, featuring six tracks that captured their energetic style:
A1: Rock You
A2: Bloody Mary
A3: Scream An’ Shout
B1: Room Number #609
B2: Open Fire
B3: Hold Me
This mini-album showcases the classic 80s J-Metal sound prevalent in the underground – driving riffs, powerful drumming (likely including double bass), melodic guitar solos, and strong, anthemic vocals. While the band would later evolve towards a more hard rock ‘n’ roll style, “Stick Into Yours” captures their heavier, distinctly 80s metal essence. Known as a relentless touring band, this release reflects the energy they brought to live stages across Japan.
ELL-021 is a crucial document of the Nagoya metal scene and the early work of Tilt. Never originally issued with an obi (though some rare copies included a poster), it’s a sought-after item for collectors representing the raw power of the Japanese metal underground.
