A Conceptual Masterpiece: Alice Cooper’s ‘From The Inside’ (P-10611W)
Today’s entry opens the doors to one of the most fascinating and polished albums in the vast discography of shock rock legend Alice Cooper. We are looking at the 1978 Japanese pressing of “From The Inside,” released on Warner Bros. Records (Warner-Pioneer Corporation) with the catalog number P-10611W.

Released in 1978, this album stands as a unique artistic statement. It is a concept album inspired by Cooper’s actual stay in a New York sanitarium for alcoholism treatment. To bring these characters and stories to life, Cooper enlisted a surprising and high-profile creative team.

The album was produced by David Foster, then rising as a master of polished pop production. Furthermore, the lyrics were co-written by Bernie Taupin, Elton John’s longtime collaborator. This combination resulted in a sound that diverged from Cooper’s gritty garage rock roots, embracing a sophisticated, AOR-infused rock sound with lush arrangements and pristine production.

The musical lineup is a “who’s who” of late 70s session aces, including Steve Lukather (Toto), Rick Nielsen (Cheap Trick), Dick Wagner, and the rhythm section of Dee Murray and Jim Keltner.

The tracklist features the hit ballad “How You Gonna See Me Now,” the power-pop title track “From The Inside,” and the haunting piano-driven “The Quiet Room.” The result is a diverse and cinematic rock album that balances Cooper’s theatricality with genuine emotional depth.

For collectors, this P-10611W release is particularly interesting due to its packaging construction. It features the elaborate “gimmick jacket” (with doors that open to reveal the inmates inside) which was actually imported from the United States, while the vinyl record, insert, and obi strip were manufactured in Japan. This hybrid packaging ensures the high print quality of the original US art combined with the superior audio quality of Japanese vinyl pressing.

P-10611W is a high-quality document of Alice Cooper’s most personal and musically sophisticated era.
