Grim Tales from Texas: Bloodrock’s ‘Bloodrock 2’ (CP-80151)

Today’s entry takes us back to the early 70s American hard rock scene with the second album from the Texas-based band Bloodrock. We are looking at the 1971 Japanese pressing of “Bloodrock 2,” released on the Capitol Records label with the catalog number CP-80151.

Released on February 25, 1971, this album sees the band evolving from the heavy guitars and dark organ sounds of their debut. The opening track, “Lucky In The Morning” (penned by associate John Nitzinger), immediately signals a shift with its West Coast-style choruses and brighter atmosphere, suggesting a conscious effort to expand their sound.

However, the album is most famous for the track that unexpectedly became a massive hit and defined their career: “D.O.A.” This 8-minute epic is a morbid, dramatic slow-burner that depicts the aftermath of a plane crash. It has been aptly described as sounding like Black Sabbath performing a Moody Blues song, possessing a chilling atmosphere that captivated audiences of the era.

Produced by Terry Knight, who was famous for managing Grand Funk Railroad, the album carries a certain pedigree, though listeners expecting the exact sound of Grand Funk might be surprised. While the twin-guitar attack and rhythm section have their rough edges, the album possesses a distinct, addictive character that grows on the listener.

CP-80151 is a classic artifact of early 70s hard rock. This Japanese pressing on black vinyl originally came with an insert sheet, making it a solid collectible for fans of the gritty, blues-based American rock sound.
