Riding the Storm: Vow Wow’s ‘Cyclone’ (WTP-90331)
Let’s explore the second album released under the Vow Wow moniker by the legendary Japanese hard rock band, titled “Cyclone.” This 12-inch vinyl LP was issued in 1985 on the Eastworld label (Toshiba EMI) with the catalog number WTP-90331. This particular copy includes the original obi strip.
Following their transitional album “Beat Of Metal Motion,” “Cyclone” finds the band fully embracing their Vow Wow identity and international ambitions. A key change on this album is that all tracks are sung entirely in English, perfectly showcasing Genki Hitomi’s powerful, world-class vocals that fans describe as transcending Japanese norms. The album is often called a “grand hard rock symphony,” noted for its speed and energy.
“Cyclone” features the classic Vow Wow lineup delivering a polished and powerful collection of hard rock and heavy metal. Listeners are treated to Kyoji Yamamoto’s virtuosic guitar work, Rei Atsumi’s prominent keyboard textures, and the solid rhythm section of Kenji Sano and Toshihiro Niimi. The album unleashes standout tracks like the famous anthem “Hurricane,” “Hell Raisers Wanted,” “U.S.A.,” and “Rock Your Cradle.”
WTP-90331 captures Vow Wow confidently striding forward, delivering high-quality, internationally-minded hard rock. “Cyclone” stands as another essential release from their prime period, showcasing their exceptional musicianship and songwriting prowess.
