Heating Up the Scene: Action!‘s ’Hot Rox’ (28PL-78)
Let’s turn up the heat with another release from the energetic Japanese hard rock band Action!. This focus is on their 1984 album, “Hot Rox,” released on the Philips label with the catalog number 28PL-78.
This 12-inch vinyl LP arrived during the band’s peak early period, right in the midst of the Japanese heavy metal explosion. Produced by the band themselves (with co-production by Yasuhiko Tokuda), “Hot Rox” finds Action! continuing to deliver their signature brand of high-voltage, straightforward hard rock and heavy metal. Recorded at Polydor and Phonogram studios in Tokyo, the album captures their powerful sound.
Listeners are treated to the driving, riff-heavy energy that defined Action!. The album features ten tracks, including energetic anthems like “Slider,” “Psychic Wars,” “Interceptor,” and the title track “Hot Rox.” It showcases their tight musicianship, featuring powerful guitar work, a pounding rhythm section, and the distinctive, commanding vocals that were a hallmark of their sound. Interestingly, the album also incorporates string arrangements by Satoshi Takebe on some tracks, adding a different texture.
The release came well-packaged with a fold-open insert, a poster, and a flyer, along with liner notes by the renowned Masa Ito. 28PL-78 stands as another strong chapter in Action!’s discography, capturing their consistent delivery of high-energy hard rock. For fans and collectors seeking the authentic sound of the classic J-Metal era, “Hot Rox” is an essential piece.
