Riding the Storm: Vow Wow’s ‘Cyclone’ (WTP-90331)
Today we explore the second album released under the Vow Wow moniker by the legendary Japanese hard rock band, titled “Cyclone.” This 12-inch vinyl LP was issued in 1985 on the Eastworld label (Toshiba EMI) with the catalog number WTP-90331.
Following their transitional album “Beat Of Metal Motion,” “Cyclone” finds the band fully embracing their Vow Wow identity, delivering a powerful and polished collection of hard rock and heavy metal tracks. Recorded across several studios (Sedic, KRS, Take One, Cherry Island), the album showcases the classic Vow Wow lineup firing on all cylinders.
“Cyclone” features the soaring English vocals of Genki Hitomi, the virtuosic guitar work of Kyoji Yamamoto, the prominent keyboard textures of Rei Atsumi, and the rock-solid rhythm section of Kenji Sano (bass) and Toshihiro Niimi (drums). The album offers a potent blend of heavy riffs, memorable melodies, and sophisticated arrangements characteristic of mid-80s melodic heavy metal. Tracks like “Hurricane,” “Hell Raisers Wanted,” “U.S.A.,” and “Rock Your Cradle” exemplify the energetic and polished sound Vow Wow perfected during this era.
WTP-90331 captures Vow Wow confidently striding forward, delivering high-quality, internationally-minded hard rock. “Cyclone” stands as another essential release from their prime period, showcasing their exceptional musicianship and songwriting prowess.
