Seeking the Riff: KUNI’s Star-Studded ‘Lookin’ For Action’ (28MM0568)
Today we revisit the impressive work of Japanese guitar virtuoso Kuni Takeuchi, known as KUNI, focusing on his sophomore solo effort, “Lookin’ For Action,” released via Polydor with the catalog number 28MM0568.
Issued in 1988, this 12-inch vinyl LP built upon the foundation laid by his 1986 debut, “Masque.” KUNI cemented his reputation not only as a skilled guitarist with a flair for melodic, hard-hitting compositions but also as a magnet for top-tier international rock talent. “Lookin’ For Action” continued this collaborative approach, resulting in another high-caliber melodic heavy metal album.
The album is centered around KUNI’s dynamic guitar playing, blending technical prowess with memorable riffs and solos. However, the project was significantly elevated by its star-studded cast of guest musicians. Powerhouse vocal performances were delivered by Jeff Scott Soto (returning from the debut) and the iconic Kevin DuBrow (Quiet Riot). The rhythm section featured an equally impressive roster, including bassists Chuck Wright (Quiet Riot, House of Lords) and John Alderete (Racer X), alongside legendary drummers Frankie Banali (Quiet Riot) and Tommy Aldridge (Whitesnake, Ozzy Osbourne). Keyboardist John Purdell also contributed once more.
This assembly of talent ensured a muscular, polished sound perfectly suited for the late-80s melodic hard rock and metal landscape. “Lookin’ For Action” (28MM0568) delivered anthemic tracks showcasing both KUNI’s guitar skills and the collective power of his guest performers, making it a standout release from the era for fans of collaborative, high-quality melodic metal.
