Flight to Fame: Earthshaker’s Landmark ‘Midnight Flight’ (K28P488)
Today we revisit a cornerstone album in the history of Japanese hard rock: Earthshaker’s third studio LP, “Midnight Flight,” released via Nexus/King Records with catalog number K28P488, promo/sample white labels.
Hitting the scene in October 1984, this album arrived during an intensely creative period for the band, following hot on the heels of their sophomore effort, “Fugitive.”“Midnight Flight” is widely regarded as the album where Earthshaker truly perfected their signature sound. Building upon the promise of their first two releases, this record masterfully balanced powerful hard rock energy with deeply emotive and incredibly catchy melodies. The combination of soaring vocals, intricate yet soulful guitar work, and a driving rhythm section reached a new level of cohesion and impact here.
The album is perhaps best known for containing the timeless anthem “Radio Magic,” a song that transcended the heavy metal genre and became a major hit, solidifying Earthshaker’s popularity across Japan. Beyond that single, the entire album delivers high-quality, memorable melodic hard rock, establishing a benchmark for the J-Metal scene.
K28P488 represents Earthshaker at a definitive peak, capturing the sound that made them legends. “Midnight Flight” remains an essential listen for understanding the power and appeal of Japanese melodic heavy metal in the 1980s.
