A comprehensive, career-spanning collection from Japanese heavy metal veterans Saber Tiger is the focus for this entry. We are looking at “The History Of The New World \~ Kyōjū Densetsu,” a 2CD best-of compilation released on February 21, 2001, via the Vap label (catalog number VPCC-84147). This particular copy includes the original obi strip.
Released to commemorate the band’s 20th anniversary (at the time), this double-disc set is not just a simple repackaging; it features a significant amount of re-recorded material, showcasing their classic songs with the powerful vocals of Takenori Shimoyama, who had become their definitive frontman.
Disc 1 is highly sought after by fans. It features tracks 1-10 (like “Ride Like The Wind,” “Law Of The Land,” “Thrillseeker,” “Hard Wire”) which are complete re-recordings of songs from their “Project One” album (which originally featured American vocalist Ron Keel). Fans widely praise these new versions, noting that Shimoyama’s dynamic vocals are a perfect fit for the material, and the rhythm section (reportedly featuring Naoto Shibata of Anthem on bass and Hirotsugu Homma of Anthem on drums) gives the tracks a powerful, “rugged” sound.
Disc 2 features tracks from their “Brain Drain” album (with “First Class Fool” being a vocal re-recording), tracks from “Paragraph 3,” an unreleased song (“Poisonous Bugs”), an acoustic version of “Eternal Loop \<Blue\>,” and a track previously unreleased on CD (“Silly (Acoustic Version)”).
VPCC-84147 stands as an essential purchase for any Saber Tiger fan and an excellent starting point for new listeners. It presents classic material in a powerful, updated form, showcasing the band’s incredible musicianship and Shimoyama’s world-class vocals. The release also includes liner notes by Kazuo Hirose of BURRN\! magazine.
