The Soul of a Guitar Hero: Richie Sambora’s ‘Aftermath Of The Lowdown’ (RS003)
Today’s entry spotlights the third solo studio album from the legendary Bon Jovi guitarist, Richie Sambora. We are looking at the 2012 US pressing of “Aftermath Of The Lowdown,” released on the independent Dangerbird Records label with the catalog number RS003.
Released on September 25, 2012, this album represents a significant departure from the polished arena rock of his main band. Unlike his debut “Stranger In This Town,” which still carried the commercial sheen of the era, “Aftermath Of The Lowdown” finds Sambora exploring a grittier, more personal, and “pure” rock sound. It feels like an album made for the love of playing rather than for radio hits.
The album opens with the aggressive, bluesy rock of “Burn That Candle Down,” featuring a guitar-vocal unison line that sets a raw tone. While tracks like “Nowadays” offer a glimpse of his catchy songwriting roots, the album shines brightest in its emotional depth. Sambora’s vocal performance is widely praised here, with fans noting a deep, soulful quality that rivals many dedicated lead singers. The ballad “Seven Years Gone” is often cited as a highlight, showcasing this expressive power.
The album also features a songwriting collaboration with Bernie Taupin (Elton John’s lyricist) on the track “Weathering The Storm.”
For collectors, it is important to note the packaging of this US release. RS003 comes in a cardboard gatefold sleeve (similar to a vinyl jacket) rather than a standard plastic jewel case or digipak. It offers a tactile, vintage feel, though it does not typically include a lyric booklet. This album is a must-have for fans who want to hear the bluesy, authentic heart of Richie Sambora.
