Unearthing the Archives: George Lynch’s ‘The Lost Anthology’ (ZACB-9017~18)

Today’s entry dives deep into the vaults of one of the most influential guitarists of the 80s LA metal scene: George Lynch. We are looking at the comprehensive 2-disc compilation “The Lost Anthology,” released in Japan on March 25, 2006, via Zain Records / Big M.F. with the catalog number ZACB-9017~18. This particular copy includes the original obi strip.

This massive collection is not a standard “greatest hits” package. Instead, it serves as a historical document for die-hard fans and guitar enthusiasts, compiling rare demos, unreleased tracks, and cover songs spanning from 1977 to 2006. It traces Lynch’s evolution from his pre-Dokken days to his later solo work.

Disc 1 focuses heavily on his early years. It features tracks from his pre-fame bands like The Boyz and Xciter (such as “Paris Is Burning” and “Jailhouse Rock”). It also includes raw demo versions of songs that would later become Dokken classics, like “Sleepless Nights” and “Heartless Heart,” offering a fascinating contrast to the polished studio versions fans know well. The opening track, “Thinking About You,” is noted for its strong resemblance to The Yardbirds’ “I Ain’t Got You.”

Disc 2 explores the Lynch Mob era and beyond, featuring demos and a variety of cover songs where Lynch puts his signature spin on tracks by Black Sabbath (“Paranoid”), Scorpions (“He’s A Woman, She’s A Man”), Alice Cooper (“Billion Dollar Babies”), and even Ratt (“Round And Round”).

While the sound quality varies across the tracks due to the archival nature of the source material (with some tracks having a raw, bootleg-like quality), ZACB-9017~18 is a treasure trove for completists. It offers a rare glimpse into the creative process and technical growth of a true guitar hero.
