Reunited and Reignited: Harem Scarem’s ‘United’ (KICP 1844)
Today’s entry spotlights the triumphant return of Canadian melodic rock legends, Harem Scarem. We are looking at their 2017 studio album, “United,” released in Japan on the Nexus label (King Records) with the catalog number KICP 1844. This copy comes complete with its original obi strip.
Issued on April 26, 2017, “United” marked the band’s first album of new material in nearly four years, following their reunion and the re-recording of their classic “Mood Swings.” The album features the return of original members Harry Hess (vocals/guitar) and Pete Lesperance (guitar), alongside longtime drummer Creighton Doane and bassist Stan Miczek. Original drummer Darren Smith also contributes backing vocals.
True to its title, “United” showcases a band firing on all cylinders, delivering their signature “Harem style” – a potent blend of heavy, driving guitars, lush vocal harmonies, and incredibly catchy, melodic choruses. The album is packed with highlights, from the uplifting title track and the refreshing “Here Today. Gone Tomorrow” to the guitar-driven “No Regrets” and the emotional “Things I Know.” Pete Lesperance’s guitar work shines throughout, balancing technical skill with melodic taste.
As is customary with King Records releases, this Japanese edition offers exclusive content for collectors. It includes the bonus track “Here Today. Gone Tomorrow (Acoustic Version),” providing a stripped-down perspective on one of the album’s key songs. KICP 1844 is an essential release for fans of melodic hard rock, capturing a veteran band revitalized and delivering a masterpiece of the genre.
